According to the Department of Commerce, losses to U.S. businesses from the counterfeiting of trademarked consumer products are estimated at $250 billion a year (Source The Association of Resale Professionals). Not only is selling and reselling counterfeit items unethical but it's illegal. There are a few steps you can take to ensure that you don't pass on counterfeit goods. Research designer and name brand items that you are posting online if you have doubts about it's authenticity or if you are not the original buyer. Ask for any sort of paperwork or forms that may help prove authenticity, does the item come with any sort of receipts, original packaging, dust bags, cards..etc. Do not solely rely on these though, these items can be faked as well or bought and sold online. Take the item to the manufacturer's store or another store that is familiar with selling the brand (Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom...etc). Lastly, do some online research. There are hundreds of thousands of blogs and articles online to help with verifying the authenticity of an item. I understand this can be overwhelming though with the amount of information out there. I have complied a list of some great websites to use for authenticating Designer and Name Brand items below. Simply click on each logo and another window will open. I have attempted to simplify this by researching several different websites and only linking the ones I feel offer the best information for resellers / buyers. Feel free to bookmark this page and check back as I will be updating reference links or adding brands as time permits.
